Meaning, you create the design, have a professional screenprint it on special transfer paper and store those on your shelves at home. Buy blank t-shirts. And be on the look out for a transfer printer [basically, a large iron]; should cost you about 500 $ for a good second hand one. Then you can print on demand. Pros: start up costs are low, you dont have to buy huge quantities of printed shirts or blanks, even. The printing quality is 90-95% of direct screen print. If you choose simulated process screen print, the colors are unlimited, although the reproduction quality is less then perfect - you lose contrast and blacks will not be truly black. Find a good company to do those transfers - F & M expressions are good, also ship international. Check prices on their site. For additional info, go to the t-shirt forums for all technical questions. And you can only print on at least 50/50 poly t-shirts, which are more expensive and hard to get, and the quality is 90-95% only for full polyester. And drop percents for less than that accordingly
I dont know where you heard that, but it is not true.
With transfers and a heat press you can print on cotton, polyester and blends. It depends on the type of transfer if there are limitations. Mesh fabrics can cause problems.
Spot color transfers are 95% identical to screen print in my experience, printed on cotton [I never use polyester or blends].
A print sized 12.75"/19", 48 sheets will cost you 4.36 p/sheet + shipping, 3 colors plastisol inks, very soft hand. You can also have several small designs on one sheet, price will remain the same.
Imo an excellent way to start out with little money and little risk. And no mess like with manual screen printing.
