Hi
The answer is that you need at least three. The first is a handgun that you can use effectively. My choice there is the 1911A1. The second gun is a shotgun. I like the Ithaca M37 loaded with #4 buck. The third gun is a rifle, I tend to the military for that. I currently like the FAL L1A1 in 308.
The final thing that I would add into my collection would be this, it takes care of most problems before they get to your door. It is legal in most states of the union.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Browning…

Like any good soldier I understand that different firearms serve different purposes.
That being said I start with a Barret 98B Chambered in .338 Lapua great at a distance.
If they are too close for the Barret we go to the new S&W M&P 15PS the gas piston system really perfects the AR.
Once the attacker gets inside I would recommend Any 12 gage pump, I like the Remington 870, and an automatic pistol of some sort, I like the Springfield XD in .40 S&W.
But most importantly I would want plenty of Ammo.
P.S.
With proper licensing you can legally own fully automatic military grade machine guns such as the MP-5 but full auto wastes ammo.

Out here where I live, I’ll only see civil unrest on TV or over the internet. For the truly urban built up area I see the shotgun like a good 12 gauge pump to be the best for urban civil unrest. Short range, yet lots of power and firing 00 buckshot means sending 9 .32 caliber lead pellets down range every time the trigger is pulled.

From what I’ve heard, the M1 Garand is a good rifle for accurate anti-personnel work at long range. They are legal for some civilians to own and operate in the United States, I’m not sure what their status is here in Canada though. For shorter range, I’d go with a glock pistol, you never know when you might need those extra rounds.

The only gun I’ve really ever used is the M-16. I like it, and I’d like to own one.
