My friend Jerry had it built by Jim Strohmeier of British Cars in Thousand Oaks - (and for obligatory Lotus content, Jim is good friends with Ritchie, the Lotus tech at Silver Star). I had quit a bit of wrench time on it myself, because I always hang out with Jim on my days off.

The car is a '64, but doesn't have ANY original running gear. So while it left the factory with a 3.8, it was built with a 1986 XJ6 motor. For the uninitiated, it is essentially the same 4.2 unit as Jaguar started using on the E-type in 1965, the main differences being the length of the cylinder head studs and the size of the intake valves (1/8" larger on the XJ6). On virtually the entire range of XK motors built by Jaguar between 1948 and 1987, parts are interchangeable.

The cylinder head was ported in accordance to drawings by Des Hammil and the head was fitted with D-type cams. These mods ALONE are good for 75-100 bhp with a bone stock bottom end. The intake is the stock triple SU 2" sidedraught carbs with needles suited to the more aggressive cam profile (which is not that aggressive by most standards - unless one of the factory wide-angled competition heads - RARE - are used, the valves will collide).

The power is transmitted through a BW T5 5-speed built by Paul Cangliosi in FL (5speeds.com). The final drive is a 3.31:1. The result is shorter gearing on the bottom end and an overdrive where there wasn't one before. Shocks, springs and torsion bars are all a mild street uprate and brakes are Wilwoods up front. The wheels are minilites.

A stock 4.2 E-type did 0-60 in 6.4 secs and the 1/4 mile in 14.9 secs at 98mph. The E-type in this video was significantly faster than my stock 1966 E-type - not verified through any empirical testing means, but by the seat-of-the-pants meter the difference was substantial. It is a VERY fast car.

Jerry had the car built to such a standard that he couldn't enjoy driving it for fear of chipping a bazillion dollar paint job or getting the underside dirty and sent it off to Russo and Steele to be auctioned in Monterey the summer before last.
