Managers of Spokane’s Camp Chevrolet Cadillac say they’ve succeeded in persuading General Motors to leave their doors open.
As part of its restructuring during bankruptcy last summer, GM announced plans to close about 2,000 dealers. Camp, which is owned by Medford-based Lithia Motors, Inc., was included in the closure group, but neither GM nor Camp announced that decision at the time.
Early this year Lithia management began a formal appeal of that decision.
So far this year, at least several dozen GM dealers across the country have succeeded, like Camp, in changing GM’s planned phase-out. Camp, at 101 E. Montgomery, has about 85 employees.
Lithia spokesman Tom Dobry said two other Lithia dealers are still appealing closures by GM but he could not disclose their names.
GM’s change of heart followed Lithia management’s presentation of data showing that Camp has a loyal customer base and is one of the busiest GM service centers in Eastern Washington, Dobry said.
“We just got the green light from GM this past week or so,” Dobry said.
The decision by GM means the car maker will again send new Chevrolets and Cadillacs to Camp. That pipeline was turned off late last summer.
Other GM dealers in the area — Knudtsen Chevrolet in Post Falls, Appleway Chevrolet in Spokane Valley and George Gee GMC in Liberty Lake — were not affected during the reorganization.
Though GM had turned off the new-vehicle pipeline, Camp continued acquiring cars through trades and arrangements with other dealers in the area, said Camp GM Scott Hushen. It now has nearly 40 new vehicles and will start receiving additional new vehicles in the coming weeks, he said.
If it had not won its appeal, Camp Chevrolet Cadillac would have lost its certification as a GM dealer in October of this year.

Sponsorships for Little League teams are nothing new. But Packwood said her staff has worked with businesses to help pay for other programs, as well. One example is a cooking class for first- through sixth-graders with food provided by Safeway. Target sponsors art classes.
"In the past we might have just built those materials into the program as the program fee," Packwood said.
Packwood and other recreation officials said demand for their programs has risen as the economy faltered.
In Oakdale, recreation supervisor Linda Royalty said most of the programs from last year are returning, including adult sports leagues, senior activities and swim classes for children. And there's a new one: Sunday outdoor movie nights, thanks to an outdoor screen the city's Rotary clubs bought for the events last year.
Outdoor movie nights are popular in Modesto and Turlock, too. More than 700 people attended the first movie night in Turlock over Labor Day weekend.
"It's a family-friendly, affordable event," Packwood said. Admission is $2; free for children 3 and under. "With this economy, people maybe aren't traveling as much. That's why I think the attendance is up."
In Modesto, the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department needs to cut the equivalent of 10¾ full-time positions for a savings of $1.2 million in the budget year that starts July 1. Director Julie Hannon said that will mean cuts at the city's recreation centers, which will operate six hours per day rather than eight.
"Additionally, the summer camp programs will be eliminated along with the Graceada Park program and the Youth Commission," she said. The city is considering looking for a private operator to handle its sports leagues.
Jill Humphrey hopes a solution can be found. She and her husband have played in Modesto's Sunday night co-ed softball league for a couple of years.
"It's a good time for lots of families, with our kids hanging out together," she said. Team members have discussed the problem and would be willing to play during the day to save the cost of operating lights. Other costs, such as umpires, come from fees that participants pay.
But Humphrey said she doesn't blame the city, which is facing a $12.7 million shortfall in its general fund.
"I just get it that it's kind of what's happening everywhere and every industry," she said.
Children take priority
It's happening in Ceres, where recreation supervisor Traci Farris said: "We have definitely had to tighten up the purse straps and really look at what programs are doing well and eliminate or replace programs that are not covering costs."
Farris said her staff noticed that given a choice between youth and adult programs, parents will enroll their children and give up their own activities. The city is partnering with the Ceres Unified School District to keep open some aquatics and sports programs.
"We took a hard look at our budget and chose to make cuts that wouldn't affect the citizens — such as office supplies, memberships and training — rather than programming," Farris said.
Riverbank is trying to keep its programs self-sufficient. It's closing a community pool on Sundays but renting it for private events.
The city is supporting classes and programs that already pay their own way with fees. And it's cutting costs by reducing its contracts with private companies for some park maintenance.
"We have always had a small staff, so there is not much to cut. Our goal is to get through this and continue to grow," said Sue Fitzpatrick, the city's parks and recreation director.
With money so scarce, cities including Modesto and Turlock have dropped their scholarship programs, which helped low-income families pay for classes and camps. Both departments are seeking grants and trying to get donations for scholarship funds.
"What we don't want is people not to participate because they can't afford it," Packwood said.
So her staff, like others, is trying to get the best bang for the bucks it has left.
"We sent letters out to business, and staff here are constantly in contact with serv-ice clubs," she said. So far, the recreation department has managed to stay afloat.
"Compared to five years ago, I don't think there are fewer things offered," Packwood said. "We as staff just are having to be creative about begging and borrowing — I don't want to say steal."

Students across Broward County joined a nationwide effort to protest discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. And they didn't have to resort to loud demonstrations to get their point across.
``We are being silent to show others what it is like when they stay silent toward discrimination and hate crimes,'' said Danielle Ott, 17, a junior who is the president of the Gay-Straight Alliance, or GSA, at Cypress Bay High School.
More than 100 students participated in the Day of Silence April 16 at the Weston school.
The Alliance, in partnership with the school's Human Relations Council and Health Occupations Students of America chapter, took part in the Day of Silence to bring attention to the impact of anti-gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender behavior, like bullying, name-calling and harassment.
The Cypress Bay protest was held in honor of Denise King, the mother of slain 17-year old Simmie Williams Jr., who was the victim of a hate crime two years ago in Fort Lauderdale.
King, who had become a strong advocate for gay and lesbian rights since her son's death, died of a heart attack New Year's Eve.
King never knew who killed Simmie on Feb. 22, 2008, in a vacant lot off Sistrunk Boulevard.
``We need to let our fellow students know so many people are being hurt by what is going on,'' said Lisandro Crouzeilles of Weston, former president of the Gay-Straight Alliance.
Teri Williams, a Prevention Specialist with Broward County School Board's Office of Prevention Program, said there are 23 Gay-Straight Alliance groups in the county.
She said at least nine other high schools held similar Day of Silence events including Dillard High School and Northeast High School in Fort Lauderdale; Coral Springs High School, J.P. Taravella and Coral Glades in Coral Springs; Boyd Anderson in Lauderdale Lakes; Deerfield Beach High School; and Plantation High School.
The students took a vow of silence for the entire school day, speaking only if asked a question in class by a teacher.
The Cypress Bay students wore stickers and handed out ``speaking cards'' to their classmates that explained their mission:
``Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies in schools. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination.''
Organized by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, the Day of Silence draws hundreds of thousands of supporters from schools (grades K-12), colleges and universities nationwide. Since its inception in 1996, it has become one of the largest student-led actions in the country.
``We want people to see how hurtful it is when others have to be silent, when they can't be open because of discrimination that is around,'' said Mitch Rivers, a 15-year old sophomore at Cypress Bay.
In 2007, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network organized a National School Climate survey to measure the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. According to the group's website, the survey found that nearly 9 of 10 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students experienced harassment at school during the previous year, three-fifths felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and about a third skipped a day of school in the past month because due to feeling unsafe.
The Gay-Straight Alliance aims to provide students with a welcoming and supportive environment. Throughout the year, they organize events aimed at spreading tolerance and acceptance. ``The answers to the problems that exist in terms of discrimination and prejudice stem around ignorance,'' Williams said. ``What these students are doing is simply a symbolic gesture that is meant to promote education.''

Another painting that I admire is called Howard in 1944. I saw a painting he did of a fishing scene but I chose not to buy it. One of my favorite paintings was done in 1962 by Bill Dodge. It's called Alligator Fisher and I'm thinking about getting because it reminds me of my cajun heritage, most of my family is from Louisiana. My sister also shares my love for folk art. It's pretty funny to me that when we were growing up, she'd cry because she wasn't allowed to play football with the boys and I used to tease her relentlessly and pull her pigtails whenever I got the chance. I don't know whose smile is bigger, the one in the painting or the one on my face every time I look at it. One of my favorites that she had was done by John Roeder. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the Age of Greed and Foolishness as the Housing Market Bubble burst across the nation, sucker punching the stock market to plummet by ~40%, and bringing foreclosure to hundreds of thousands of families' homes. The real estate "Professionals"- the realtors, builders, mortgage brokers gleefully pumped the market up, and made out like bandits. Buyers speculated too, buying to flip homes onto the next speculator. Bankers happily sold "liar loan"mortgages to people who clearly couldn't afford the payments down the line. Realtors now line up buyers for foreclosed homes, taking them on "bus tours" of thousands of now empty homes. GM and Chrysler are bankrupt in all but name. 2008's "smart money" invests with with Bernie Madoff, who gives a 12% yearly return despite the market tanking. Sure thing, guys.
2009 is coming. Things shall worsen for a while, and this too shall pass.
The restaurant business is down perhaps 8-20% so far- not as bad as the devastated housing market. People now eat out less often, or order less when they do eat out. More new restaurants open, than old ones shut doors, shrinking the "pieces of the pie". Cuts are made that are not too noticeable. Menus are scrutinized to keep pricepoints in line with competitors.
NAPLES-COLLIER COUNTY OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS
Sea Salt just opened with a wonderful Mediterranean splash on 3rd Avenue South.
M Waterfront Grille is the wonderful reincarnation of Maxwell’s on the Bay with top chef Brian Roland at the helm, and a beautiful water view.
There’s an elegant triad at the Mercato- McCormick & Schmick’s terrific seafood and incredible happy hour offerings, Capital Grille is at the top of their game with fine steaks, and Whole Foods is a foodie heaven with a huge variety. Nestled between is Sur La Table, my “toystore” for cooking supplies.
IM Tapas opened with top Spanish cuisine near Naples Community Hospital (NCH); Chef Isabel Pozo Polo is a whirling dervish in the kitchen. Alas, nearby Habanero's Mexican threw in its serape.
Jaegerhaus's owners bought back their German spot, the cuisines' better than ever. I’ve been there quite a few times-it’s fun! Saffron Indian Restaurant is very good, family owned, and I and my Indian friends (and cooks) have become regulars there, too.
Naples Bonefish Grill, on the water east of popular 5th Ave South, serves great seafood and steaks at a great price point. Olio’s Italian cuisine opened at the other end of the Naples Bay Resort.
Eurasia, on the East Trail, well worth the trip, is my favorite for serving both delicious Vietnamese and Italian cuisines, with two separate, top chefs for each cuisine. Yukihana Japanese is in the Kings Lake PlazaChef Annie Prizzi holds court at Dish, in the elegant Escalante Hotel, at the end of 5th Avenue South. Check out their Valentine's day special.
Kona Grill in the Coastland Center mall, lasted less than 2 years. Once fine Nektar faded on the vine, a business partnership turned rotten. Wine Knows, a favorite wine store, was suddenly stoppered. Panera Bread popped up in the Gateway Shopping Plaza, at the site of Silver Spoon.
At Bayfront, Catch 22 went belly up, then Scenes on the Bay sunk, and teh site has now become Tavern on the Bay. Brazilian-style top restaurant Grill Club Churrascaria hung up its chaps; Bianchi's Italian replaced it. On the other side of successful Roy’s, Chrissy’s opened where Petit Syrah soured and then Lisbon Nights waned. There’s still some empty Bayfront slots to be filled.
Marie-Michelle’s gently closed, and Miramare Italian may sing in its place by 2009's season’s end. Bryan Sutton's Tropical Reef foundered, and Naples Cheese Cake collapsed.Chinese Shing Long's Park Shore cookie crumbled after 21 years; Golden Leaf just took over. It's a Grind Coffeehouse stirred its last cup, and Encore at Vanderbilt and Airport, sang its swan song. Macaroni Grill on 41 by Immokalee noodled out of town, and Tastebuds of Naples, the restaurant arm of the still highly popular caterer, Greg Shapiro, was purchased back by Chrissy’s-taking it full circle. Wahoo's Bar and Grille drifted to Davey Jones' locker, and sister Amador's failed after 3 months. Tough times.

Naples Tomato (Italian food) is going strong, and opened Sideline Joe’s a few doors down, selling wings, burgers and things. Tiny upstart Café Italia, next door to Naples Tomato, started with lunch, and soon started serving Italian dinners. Along with Sam-Bucco’s, there’s now 3 Italian spots in the tiny plaza! Harvest Moon opened with Asian delights, just to be a different cookie.
FORT MYERS - LEE COUNTY OPENINGS AND CLOSINGS
Ft Myers had major finer dining spot losses, with the loss of 4.5 year old Cru, the once favorite watering hole of high flying realtors, lawyers and mortgage brokers. Founded with Chef Shannon Yates, the food was creative and very good quality. Shannon was suddenly forced out. Things faltered. Brian Roland took the helm of the sinking ship, and soon left to head M Waterfront in Naples, Richie Wilim took over. Te owners seemed to cut food costs and quality, to survive the economy. REgulars stopped coming, and owners Dr. John and Liz Kagan’s CPR couldn’t revive it. Harold’s, a reasonably priced successful favorite by the riverfront for 6 years, was beaten senseless by the City of Fort Myers' bungled, ill planned longstanding access- blocking construction. Owner Harold Balink is still at H2’s, a perennial favorite with great tapas and live entertainment. Patio 33, another Fort Myer’s city bungling victim, was a vintage favorite with beautiful historic brick walls and a rooftop bar. Chef Dennis Meurgue offered great food and a lovely setting, in return, the city tore up sidewalks and nearby streets for two years. Way to help local businesses, and kill your tax base, Fort Myers officials-now dine on TV dinners and Alpo. Dwyer’s closed, despite bringing in a top spa chef , Bill Wavrin, and asking him to serve astronomically priced steaks! Icabods has opened in its place.
Lovely Jaynes’ Victorian Garden withered, and Blue Pepper Gourmet Market went down after losing two top chefs. Mildreds’ Country failed, and Country Harvest took over. Cape Coral’s 850 Lafayette offered ok food and higher prices, and was 86’d. Sanibel’s Gasparilla’s walked the plank; Biddle’s Bucket is doing well in its place. Fort Myers Beach’s The Bridge sank after 25 years. Thistle Lodge’s former Exec Chef Mark Davidson suddenly left them chef-less before the 2008 season started-not a problem, Chef John Wolff rescued Thistle in 2008, and Thistle’s cuisine is tops.
Newcomers in Lee County include Artistic Deli; Shannon Yates’ Mad Takeout is poised to start with Ruth Cohen.. Cape Coral got its touch of class with Bonefish Grill’s delicious fish-the place is packed! Tastings Wine Experience opened at the Gulf Coast Town Center, and is a wonderful friendly bistro with 80 wines by the glass and reasonably priced, tasty food. 55 Degrees has great cheeses and an ok wine selection; their walk in business seems to be less after Blu Sushi opened. Stir Crazy brings a fresh approach to Estero’s numerous spots at Coconut Point. Ruths’ Chris Steaks is just holding on there, as the priciest spot in the Center.
Bonita Springs Angelina’s brings top quality Italian to town. A Table Apart is a highly rated gem, whose chef’s Hawaiian and French culinary background offers top quality cuisine at reasonable prices. David Wong’s Pan Asian offers very good Asian food and great service (where Cilantro Tamales franchise twice failed). Dos Jalapenos opened at a Ruby Tuesday’s. Mister Chile, a Mexican restaurant started in the Shoppes at Hawthorne, on Old 41, along with Hot Pastrami & More.
Bonita’s closings include: Spectator’s, Applebee’s, The Old World Café, Neon Bar & Grill and Duval St. Seafood, which briefly reopens, gasps, and closes, seemingly every few months. Vacarilla’s Argentinian "went south" over the summer, and Minarcaa’s Mexican had a butterfly’s brief existence.
I see a very challenging year ahead for Lee County, with Cape Coral having the most foreclosures in the county, and a gentle exodus of people, suddenly without homes or jobs. Visit restaurants-their wait staff, cooks and others, need your support more than ever.
That’s just the truth of the matter. But I believe that even with student athletes having lowered standards that the academic requirements for the Big Ten are higher than that of the SEC. This isn’t to say there are not incredibly intelligent players on SEC football teams but to point out that because their academic standards tend to be lower than Big Ten schools they get a boost in recruiting. Also its warm down south and lets face it most of those guys don’t want to play in the cold.

Another painting that I admire is called Howard in 1944. I saw a painting he did of a fishing scene but I chose not to buy it. One of my favorite paintings was done in 1962 by Bill Dodge. It’s called Alligator Fisher and I’m thinking about getting because it reminds me of my cajun heritage, most of my family is from Louisiana. My sister also shares my love for folk art. It’s pretty funny to me that when we were growing up, she’d cry because she wasn’t allowed to play football with the boys and I used to tease her relentlessly and pull her pigtails whenever I got the chance. I don’t know whose smile is bigger, the one in the painting or the one on my face every time I look at it. One of my favorites that she had was done by John Roeder. It’s called First Trolley to Van Nuys and shows the center of a town filled with people. Maybe it’s because I spent

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the Age of Greed and Foolishness as the Housing Market Bubble burst across the nation, sucker punching the stock market to plummet by ~40%, and bringing foreclosure to hundreds of thousands of families’ homes. The real estate “Professionals”- the realtors, builders, mortgage brokers gleefully pumped the market up, and made out like bandits. Buyers speculated too, buying to flip homes onto the next speculator. Bankers happily sold “liar loan”mortgages to people who clearly couldn’t afford the payments down the line. Realtors now line up buyers for foreclosed homes, taking them on “bus tours” of thousands of now empty homes. GM and Chrysler are bankrupt in all but name. 2008’s “smart money” invests with with Bernie Madoff, who gives a 12% yearly return despite the market tanking. Sure thing, guys.
2009 is coming. Things shall worsen for a while, and this too shall pass.
The restaurant business is down perhaps 8-20% so far- not as bad as the devastated housing market. People now eat out less often, or order less when they do eat out. More new restaurants open, than old ones shut doors, shrinking the “pieces of the pie”. Cuts are made that are not too noticeable. Menus are scrutinized to keep pricepoints in line with competitors.

Obviously..Teachers...Without teachers, there is no meaning to a college life..Some good teacher, some strict teacher, some funny teachers...They are the part of our conversation for more than 90% of times..It is said that School or College is our Second home..And teachers are our Second Parents...It is also said that once a very witty and intelligent, knowledgeable saint was said to bow infront of anyone..Teacher or God...The saint said undoubtedly, Im touching the feets of my teacher..because whatever knowledge I have and whatever I am today is just because of my teacher..God was just a medium to let both of us meet here on the earth..But whatever I have today in me..Knowledge..Language..Speech..All is given to me through my auspicious teacher..So teacher owes such an importance in our life..
This one year I had many teachers to teach me..I would like to talk personally about them whom I liked very much..In the first semester..Zaheer sir was my class-teacher..The most gentle teacher I would say in Bharati Vidyapeeth...well-dressed, well-mannered..He was knowledgeable and was good at teaching..He taught us C Programming..and just because of his conduct of teaching the subject, it was possible for me to excel in the programs and coding..I gained 71 marks in his subject..Highest in the class..Credit goes to him first and then to me..The only drawback in my favourite teacher of 1st semester was Partiality..Then I would like to talk about Divya Mam-the most beautiful teacher of our college..She taught us English and the way she used to speak was so soft and melodious that I felt sometimes she was a teacher form of Lata Mangeshkar..The way she used to say,"Abhilash beta, aisa nahi hota hai..Aap galat kar rahe ho." Wow..Very nice..She was the mixture of Wisdom and Beauty..She kept herself upgraded with the new trends and gens..and above everything..She used to teach us English, my favourite subject...
This semester I had Taruna madam...The teacher who impressed me the most in the whole academic year..She had degrees of all the three streams- Arts, Science , commerce and even Medical..Wow..Wonderful..As I love multi-talented people..I saw madam carefully..She was different..This madam has given me the biggest success of my 1st academic year..Till the time , I gave my presentation only a girl in my class scored 10 out of 10 in it..I was the second..Madam clapped for me after my presentation..Before this madam had not clapped for anyone else..Then she asked me two questions..I answered them confidently..She again clapped..And with it she proudly gave me 10 out of 10..Then talking about assignment..The only child who gained 10 out of 10 in assignments is me..Just because of madam..And she divulged and appreciated me infront of the whole class...When I gave the audition for the dance on fest..She was the judge..and so beautifully she commented..She said that Abhilash you have beautiful eyes..Try keeping them open all in the performance except in the wordings where sad expressions is needed..Your eyes are beautiful and it should be noticed while you dance..Wow..A very nice compliment..Thank you mam..
Now, talking about Snehal madam who taught Organizational Behaviour..This was the only lecture I used to wait impatiently..I liked reacting and debating and arguing with the mam..Actually mam had little ego problems bcoz of which she always criticized students..I think I was the only student she had appreciated mostly..She is the only madam who gave so much weightage to my blogs..She used to talk about my blogs daily and read it too..Thank you mam..For my article in DNA..when Taruna mam gifted 1 mark of internal for that..This madam gifted 10 marks to me for that article..Thanks a lot madam for motivating me this way..Hope to see you in next semester too..
Last but not the least, I would like to talk about Gajanan Sir..Who taught us IT in 1st semester and Data Structure in the 2nd sem..The Sir who is the friend of everyone..The Sir who is loved by every student of the college..When it is talked about that Iss college ka toh system hi khraab hai..then people add to it..Sirf ek Gajanan Sir hi atcha hai..He thinks from the desire point of view of students..Bless every student with good internals without any much assignments..Bless students with notes and every easy resource..Gajanan Sir is great..Very weak by personality but very strong by heart..God bless you Sir....
